5 out of 5 stars Well written, easy to understand   March 4, 2010
Larry Gerndt (Sunnyvale, CA United States)
Just a short note to say that I was absolutely delighted by how well this book is written. The author seems to truly want to teach, as opposed to wanting to make money. And teach he does, in a very well disciplined approach of describing the fundamentals before proceeding to describe the details. I gained most of my Spring knowledge from this excellent book and heartily recommend it for anyone who wants get up and running with Spring MVC.

5 out of 5 stars The best programming book I ever read   December 22, 2009
David Marco Palao (Spain)
Spring Recipes, by Gary Mak, is undoubtly the best programming book I ever read. Incredible well written, with high usable examples across the entire book, makes all the covered topics easy to learn. When I started to read it, I have no knowledge at all of Spring... now, I am creating my own enterprise application from end to end. Only say that I am eager for the next book releases of Gary Mak (Spring Web Recipes and Hibernate Recipes). I hope those will be the ones that finally improves both my knowledge and productivity on Spring.
If you want to come on quickly with Spring, purchase this book guy!!

Greetings.

5 out of 5 stars The perfect ingredients   December 12, 2009

I have never written a review of any books before, but this book has compelled me to. Let me give you the short version first: this is the first and only reference book so far that I enjoy reading. In fact, I find it hard to put down, much like a good novel. Other reference books make it difficult to get through chapters with dry writing, horrendous examples that often don't even work (foo bar examples? really?), and in-cohesiveness of material. Not this book. The author has a wonderfully engaging writing style, the examples are very practical and work, and the book layout is wonderful with the Problem - Solution approach, as well as the overall chapter layout (Core, Fundamentals, Advanced). Each chapter has the right amount of information, describes different methods (classic methods vs annotations, etc.), and gives you some advanced real-world tips in between that clearly illustrate the author truly has experience using Spring in the wild. Not to mention I haven't found a single typo. I will be reading this many times over in my conquest of Spring. I waited until I was at the end of this book before writing a review, in case there was something in later chapters that was to my dislike, or some typos somewhere. Alas, the whole book is just wonderful, I can find nary a flaw with it. My only disappointment is that the author doesn't write more books! Look for a version based on Spring 3.0 from this author soon. I whole-heartedly recommend this for Spring beginners and experts alike. Great job Gary!

5 out of 5 stars Quickest way to hit the ground running   December 6, 2009
Ananda Chaudhuri (Flushing, New York United States)
If I have to have one Spring book, this would be it...very well written, extremely practical and with the right level of detail. This is not only great in content but also a joy to read...and as a result one gets the most bang for the time spent with the book. This is a must have companion for learning a key Java technology framework.

4 out of 5 stars Great comlimentary book for learning   November 6, 2009

I was tasked with having to learn the Spring framework and bought the book "Spring in Action" which.. though it was a very good book.. was sometimes a bit too disconnected at times from the example source code the book would refer to in very short and small snippets. As a result, though I felt I was learning the theoretical academics of Spring, I was hard pressed to feel like I could relate to it on a concrete coding level. As a result, I did my research on other Spring books and found this one. Armed with my cursory theoretical knowledge of Spring, this book was EXACTLY what I needed to connect the theory to actual coding practices and really brought it home in very practical terms. I should point out that a person could very easily learn Spring from just reading this book alone but I think that some up front base knowledge of how Spring works really makes this book shine. My recommendation is to simply read through Spring's tutorials first (online) and then read through this book. When you are done, you will be a Spring expert in no time flat!
