Product Description

A groundbreaking and irresistible biography of three of America's most important musical artists -- Carole King, Joni Mitchell, and Carly Simon -- charts their lives as women at a magical moment in time.

Carole King, Joni Mitchell, and Carly Simon remain among the most enduring and important women in popular music. Each woman is distinct. Carole King is the product of outer-borough, middle-class New York City; Joni Mitchell is a granddaughter of Canadian farmers; and Carly Simon is a child of the Manhattan intellectual upper crust. They collectively represent, in their lives and their songs, a great swath of American girls who came of age in the late 1960s. Their stories trace the arc of the now mythic sixties generation -- female version -- but in a bracingly specific and deeply recalled way, far from cliché. The history of the women of that generation has never been written -- until now, through their resonant lives and emblematic songs.

Filled with the voices of many dozens of these women's intimates, who are speaking in these pages for the first time, this alternating biography reads like a novel -- except it's all true, and the heroines are famous and beloved. Sheila Weller captures the character of each woman and gives a balanced portrayal enriched by a wealth of new information.

Girls Like Us is an epic treatment of midcentury women who dared to break tradition and become what none had been before them -- confessors in song, rock superstars, and adventurers of heart and soul.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating. Well Written. Too Bad It Had To End   March 1, 2010
Marc Axelrod (Potter, Wi USA)
This is a great biography of three great female pop stars: Carole King, Joni Mitchell, and Carly Simon. Carole King's life is covered, from her early years, to her job as a Brill Building song writer with Gerry Goffin, and we also see her evolution into a Laurel Canyon California single mom, and into several more marriages and relationships that didn't last. We also see her struggle to come to grips with trying to write and record musical compositions that stand up to her Tapestry album.

Joni Mitchell had the same issues, as her latter day recordings were constantly compared to her early albums, and they were found wanting by most critics. You also read about her tempestuous relationships. She and Carly Simon had lots of men in their lives, and it is amazing how these failed relationships find poetic expression in their songs. I'll never listen to Joni's Car on a Hill from the Court and Spark album the same way ever again.

It was also neat to learn that Carly Simon's "Anticipation" was written while she was waiting for Cat Stevens to pick her up on a date, and he was several hours late!

James Taylor figures prominently at times, as he was once lovers with Joni and married to Carly. His addiction to heroin basically killed his marriage to Carly.

These women succeeded tremendously in the artistic world, yet struggled greatly in the romantic world. Carole in particular went from one bad relationship to another, and you end up feeling a little sorry for her. I hope that she finds someone who makes her feel like a natural woman.

On the other hand, Joni comes off as a controlling woman with freaky moments where she seems to lose it, like when she almost kills herself over Jackson Browne and when she hauls off and slaps her adult daughter. I always liked her songs, but this book made me a little afraid of her.

Carly is a passionate woman who wants to be a good mom and as normal as one can be in the pop diva world.

It seems that these brilliant, artistic women struggled most of their lives to find peace, satisfaction and meaning. The author does a great job of involving you in their lives. One reviewer said that the only thing wrong with this book is that it had to end. I agree. Thumbs up.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorites....   January 14, 2010
Amy Anderson (Chicago)
Not only does this book give an in-depth view of these three great artists' lives, but also a look into the time period filled with sexual freedom, women's rights, and amazing music. That generation truly altered United States history.

Not only do we read about these three women, but the other great artists in their lives: James Taylor, David Crosby, Steven Stills, Graham Nash, Cat Stevens, etc and etc. I found it especially enjoyable to listen to the music that Sheilia mentioned in the book. I also loved finding out the background meaning to some of my favorite songs.

Must read for anyone who lives Mitchell, Simon, King, and/or the time period. I am truly a Joni Mitchell fan, but I found all their stories captivating.

5 out of 5 stars Essential for any Joni Mitchell fan   January 7, 2010
N. A. Edwards (Auckland New Zealand)
I bought this book for my sister as a Christmas gift. She is a huge Joni Mitchell fan. She loved this book because she learned things about Joni she wasn't aware of.

I gained huge kudos for buying the book.

5 out of 5 stars A brilliant, nostalgic trip through time   December 1, 2009
Alyssa Rushmore (New York, NY)
If you grew up on the music of Carly Simon, Joni Mitchell and Carole King, you'll love this layered look at the women who created some of the most enduring and beloved hits in the history of music. If you didn't--and indeed, their heyday was a bit before my time--you'll want to run out and buy their albums as soon as you finish this fascinating tome, as I did, if only to listen to their music with a new sense of wonder. I was fascinated by these women, and I loved this book--Weller is a wonderful writer.

2 out of 5 stars Terrible writing   December 1, 2009
Judi Muller (Santa Barbara)
The book was definitely fun to read - I loved reading all the stories behind the music. I just wish Sheila Weller were a better writer. The writing was pretty awful.
