Product Description

A groundbreaking and irresistible biography of three of America's most important musical artists -- Carole King, Joni Mitchell, and Carly Simon -- charts their lives as women at a magical moment in time.

Carole King, Joni Mitchell, and Carly Simon remain among the most enduring and important women in popular music. Each woman is distinct. Carole King is the product of outer-borough, middle-class New York City; Joni Mitchell is a granddaughter of Canadian farmers; and Carly Simon is a child of the Manhattan intellectual upper crust. They collectively represent, in their lives and their songs, a great swath of American girls who came of age in the late 1960s. Their stories trace the arc of the now mythic sixties generation -- female version -- but in a bracingly specific and deeply recalled way, far from cliché. The history of the women of that generation has never been written -- until now, through their resonant lives and emblematic songs.

Filled with the voices of many dozens of these women's intimates, who are speaking in these pages for the first time, this alternating biography reads like a novel -- except it's all true, and the heroines are famous and beloved. Sheila Weller captures the character of each woman and gives a balanced portrayal enriched by a wealth of new information.

Girls Like Us is an epic treatment of midcentury women who dared to break tradition and become what none had been before them -- confessors in song, rock superstars, and adventurers of heart and soul.

4 out of 5 stars Back in the 60s and 70s   July 21, 2010

Excellent way to go back in time. Follows 3 ground-breaking women's lives! Now we know what the real lyrics to the songs mean......could have been better written, but so much ground is covered that the author felt she needed to include it all!!

5 out of 5 stars Devoured this book like it was a hot fudge sundae!   June 23, 2010

Yum! What a great read - "Girls Like Us" is a brilliant take on women in the Sixties, as exemplified by the juicy lives of Carly, Carole and Joni. The old joke is that "if you remember the Sixties, you weren't there." Well, I was there - a student at Berkeley from 1963 - 1968 - and I recall in exquisite detail those delicious years. But, until this book, I never read anything that so hypnotically and sensually captured the way it was. The women's liberation movement was an American Revolution: once we were chattel; now we were free. The roads Ms. Weller's heroines took - the conflict, the bravery, the heartache, the loneliness, the great sex, the mind-blowing drugs, the music that shaped your life and your dreams - were the same paths the rest of us traveled. OK, maybe we didn't sleep with James Taylor, but we had our own, private versions of the tortured souls who still make us swoon. Anyone near my age - and, oh my God, we're almost 65!!!!!!! - will enjoy this trip down memory lane that will no doubt conjure up psychedelic images of your own adventures. And, for young women of my daughter's age (30), and anyone in between my era and hers, read this and you will understand how it came to be that that women are everywhere they are supposed to be - the Supreme Court, Congress, Governor's mansions and, someday the White House. How did this equality come to pass? It happened because we removed our bras, put on pants, used birth control, spoke our minds and politely explained that we were as bright and capable as any man who stood in our way. And, aren't we all lucky that Ms. Weller came along to beautifully tell the story about how Carly, Carole and Joni Simon, lived our lives, shared our thoughts, wrote our words and sang our songs in perfect pitch.

1 out of 5 stars atrocious writing   June 22, 2010

I got this book from the library after watching a Carole King concert on t.v. I love all three singers, and I was eager to learn more about them. Sadly, the writing style is so awful that I couldn't get past the first chapter. I tried to read random parts of the book to see if the writing improved, but it didn't. There is so much extraneous boring detail in every sentence that it just isn't worth picking out potentially interesting nuggets of information. It's hard to believe that an editor ever touched a draft of this book.

4 out of 5 stars Getting reacquainted with old friends   June 6, 2010

I used to eagerly await each new Carly Simon album back in the days when they were pressed on vinyl. One of my all-time favorite movie songs ("It was you all along, you who kept me strong ... and I'm in love for the last time") was written and sung by Carole King ... in 1986. But to tell you the truth, I haven't thought about either woman in years. I received this book as a gift and once I started it, I couldn't put it down.

Carole is the determined craftsman of the group -- music was her job as well as her passion. Tapestry made such an indelible mark on popular music that it's easy to overlook how important and influential her work with Gerry Goffin was. Carly is a beautiful free spirit, who loved well but not wisely and used it to inspire her most memorable work.

This book goes into great detail about their work and how they created it. I learned a lot about the music business and how sexist it was, still very recently, and it enhanced my appreciation of each woman's music.

Joni Mitchell is too remote and rather unlikeable for my taste. But I realize that no one is going to like all three of these artists equally, and for me, as a performer and a woman, she's just not as interesting as Carly and Carole.

I love how the author takes us on a life journey with each woman's career, using her as a metaphor for American women of her generation, and I'm pleased to report that today, all three are happy grandmothers.

4 out of 5 stars no Photos in Kindle Edition??   June 3, 2010

This may not be the correct forum for this comment, but the Kindle edition of this book did not contain the humerous photographs which are included in the paper edition. Haven't had this issue with other Kindle books. Other than that I enjoyed the book; extremely detailed and well researched, and a page turner. But I really missed those photos.
