Product Description
One man. One choice. Someone must die. From #1 New York Times bestselling author Dean Koontz comes this pulse-pounding thriller that starts with a terrifying decision we all might face one day: Help-or run. Timothy Carrier is an ordinary guy. He enjoys a beer after work at his friend's tavern, the eccentric customers and amusing conversations. But tonight is no ordinary night. The jittery man sitting beside him has mistaken Tim for someone else-and passes him an envelope stuffed with cash and the photo of a pretty woman. "Ten thousand now. You get the rest when she's gone." Tim Carrier always thought he knew the difference between right and wrong, good and evil. But tonight everything he thought he knew-even about himself-will be challenged. For Tim Carrier is at the center of a mystery of extraordinary proportions, the one man who can save an innocent life and stop a killer as relentless as evil incarnate. But first he must discover resources within himself of which he never dreamed, capacities that will transform his idea of who he is and what it takes to be . . .

1 out of 5 stars Good concept - poor execution   July 23, 2010
Philip Flowers
What started as an interesting concept devolved into a tv-movie-of-the-week episode. Disappointing. As happens on occasion with a Koontz book, he seems to lose interest in his original concept and gets sloppy wrapping up an ending. The whole premise for the main storyline (a women being targeted for execution by a professional killer), is so ridiculously unbelievable that it's a huge letdown. Don't waste your time with this one. Koontz does have many other books which are so much better.

1 out of 5 stars Koontz fans, don't bother. Total retread & rip off.   June 17, 2010
Book Lover (California)
If I could give this minus stars, I would. I feel cheated of my time and money. If you are a big Koontz fan, you will recognize the creepy psycho killer who thinks himself a special, superior, entitled being who likes to randomly torment and kill perfect strangers, not just his original targets. You will recognize the plucky, emotionally-damaged hero with issues that will surface but be resolved now that he has met the right girl and the plucky, emotionally-damaged heroine with issues that will surface but be resolved now that she has met the right guy. Behind the evil lurks shadowy, utterly ruthless bureaucrats who aren't psycho, exactly, but who feel that they are special, superior, entitled beings who have the right to remake the world the way they see fit, etc., etc.

The biggest difference between this and a number of his earlier books is that Koontz not only essentially re-used--with only an insultingly-little surface disguise-- character types, scenes, situations, and plot elements, but he didn't even worry about plausibility when he ended this one. The "conclusion" is ridiculous. It's as if he felt, "Well, I have churned out the requisite number of pages, guess I'll throw something in so I can stop." If you haven't read his earlier third person narratives, you might find the book entertaining for a while because you won't be in a constant state of deja vu, but you will definitely feel bored and cheated by the time you are approaching the end.

I can only assume his publishers expect a certain number of books within a period of time, and no one cares if he shamelessly recycles old ideas if he can't think of anything new. It is as if a less talented writer were asked to come up with an imitation of earlier Koontz books.

5 out of 5 stars WORTH RE-READING   June 1, 2010
Joseph Yeater (Hampton, GA USA)
Recently picked up this book and after about 20 or so pages realized I had already read it a few years ago. It was good enough to read again so I did.

I am shocked at the bad reviews for this book--if it was good enough for me to read twice--it should be good enough for you to read once. Especially liked the interaction with Tim's mom. Also recommend "The Good Husband" by the same author.

3 out of 5 stars The Good Guy is not Great...nor is he Bad...   February 5, 2010
Book Knurd (Paradise)
This review is for the Audiobook version of this book.

The first thing that struck me about this audiobook is the voice of Richard Ferrone, the reader. He has a wonderfully deep and throaty voice that lends itself well to the subject matter. However, because his voice is what it is, his range is somewhat limited. This is very much evident when he assumes the roll of the women in the story. As a result it's hard not to envision these women as brusque, long-time smokers.

The second thing that came to mind was that it was very difficult to imagine real people talking the way these people did. The dialogue is often silly and so sterotypical of the characters and genre.

Thirdly, it doesn't take very long before the reader pretty much knows what the outcome is going to be and the only question left is how much blood will spill on the journey there.

But, generally speaking, The Good Guy is a decent cat and mouse thriller with the obligatory love interest tagging along for a ride. There is action, mild sexual tension, a little bit of mystery and, everyone's favorite, a megalomaniacal killer on the loose. Give it a shot if this genre is your gig.

5 out of 5 stars A Thriller You Can't Put Down   January 29, 2010
D. Rowland (a Cool Dry Place)
4 out of 4 found this review helpful

Mason Timothy Carrier is a simple man, a guy who just wants to do his job, do it well and maybe enjoy a quiet beer after work. One day while having that beer in his friend's bar someone talks to him for a bit, then leaves him an envelope stuffed with money and a picture of a woman. It doesn't take Tim long to figure out that he's been mistaken for a hit man. Then the real hit man comes into the bar. Tim tries to tell him that he's the guy who hired him and that the deal's off. Tim is trying to be the good guy.

However, as I'm sure you've guessed, the real hit man doesn't go for the story and it's not long before Tim and the woman he'd tried to save are on the run. This is a thriller that will have you on the edge of your seat as you rapidly pour through the pages. I couldn't put it down and I don't think you will be able to either.
